Valdres International Academy is a masterclass and chamber orchestra course for young musicians who have achieved an advanced level for their age. The course is designed for participants with a high musical proficiency, ideal for those aiming to further develop both individually and in ensemble settings. In addition to orchestra sessions, all participants receive daily individual instruction on their instrument, guided by some of Europe's leading instructors. The course also offers elective subjects, including MITOP, sight-reading (Prima Vista), and chamber music.

The Valdres International Academy is open to participants from abroad, and some of the instruction may be given in English.

Valdres International Academy for string players born between 2007 and 2011 takes place in both course periods but features slightly different content and teaching structures.

Course details

  • Daily one-on-one lesson   
  • Daily practice sessions in larger and smaller ensembles  
  • Accompaniment and performance in course concerts 
  • Ensemble performance with fellow course participants at the final concert  
  • Option to take chamber music as an elective (NOK 1,000 per person)  
  • Option to take Music in Theory and Practice as an elective (NOK 500) 
  • Option to take Prima Vista as an elective (NOK 500)  
  • Free admission to all course concerts  
  • All participants stay at Valdres folkehøgskole
  • The course area offers various recreational activities, such as soccer, chess, and swimming

Criterias

  • Instruments: violin, viola, cello, and double bass 
  • Application processing requires payment of the application fee (NOK 300)  
  • Participation requires payment of the course fee in advance of the course  
  • All applicants must submit a recording of a self-selected piece that demonstrates their technical and musical abilities, 3-5 minutes in length. A link to the video should be uploaded in the application form
